“I want people to understand that my goal to improve the self-love of young African-American women should never be confused with advocating racial supremacy. There are a lot of young black girls who I meet in my travels who don’t have a lot of self-esteem. So if I communicate to them that they’re beautiful, no white person should find fault in that. It doesn’t mean that young white girls aren’t beautiful, because they are just as beautiful.” — Lauryn Hill (via blackfashion)

Memorial Day Was Started By Former Slaves After The Civil War

occupyallstreets:

According to Professor David Blight of Yale University, the first Memorial Day took place on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC, after a group of African-Americans, mostly former slaves, gave 257 Union soldiers a proper burial. The black community in Charleston then consecrated the new cemetary with “an unforgettable parade of 10,000 people,” led by 3,000 black school children. It was initially called “Decoration Day.

this man has been through a lot. he was an intelligence analyst for the US army, and used his top secret clearance to gain access to sensitive documents and then released them to Wikileaks. among the leaked information was this video (pictured on right). i saw this a couple of years ago, before i had even heard of Bradley Manning, and was shocked, appalled, and very bothered by what it revealed. it really changed my perspective on war forever. in short, it’s the video and audio from an apache helicopter in iraq that murders innocent civilians. at first, they killed 10 people, two of which were reuter’s journalists whose cameras were mistaken as weapons. after the initial attack, a van appears to rescue the few survivors that remained, and is attacked once again by the helicopter. there were two children inside the van, both of whom were injured. three men were also killed in the second attack. then, they go on to kill even more people. it’s outrageous.
i understand that these things happen during war, but hearing the audio of the soldiers’ dialogue that is taking place as they are essentially committing murder is very disturbing.
happy memorial day. remember more than our fallen troops. remember those who were the innocent victims of war. (i hate the word ‘casualty’. any word describing death from war that has the word “casual” is not ok with me.)
FREE BRADLEY MANNING! thoughts, prayers, and gratitude for he and his family.
